Disabled party activists have welcomed the Labour

first_imgDisabled party activists have welcomed the Labour leader’s decision to back their campaign for him to reinstate the post of shadow cabinet minister for mental health.Jeremy Corbyn was forced to scrap the post he created only last year in July because of the departure of MP Luciana Berger and the need to appoint a slimmed-down shadow cabinet, following a spate of other resignations. But members of the Labour Party Campaign for Mental Health called at this week’s annual party conference in Liverpool for him to appoint a replacement to the role, following his re-election as party leader. And they were delighted when Corbyn visited their campaign stand (pictured afterwards) and posed with a placard calling for the position to be renewed.Victoria Desmond, the campaign’s strategic director, said she hoped such an appointment would “feed down everywhere and hopefully to the workplace and hopefully to parliament”.Desmond later told a fringe event organised by Disability Labour – the network of disabled Labour party members – that people with mental health conditions like herself experienced widespread discrimination. She said: “People don’t have protection at work and it’s very hard to fight for protection when you’re being stigmatised.“You shouldn’t feel ashamed to have a mental health condition and that is how it is at the moment.”She said she had not felt able to disclose her impairment to her first boss – a Labour MP – but had felt comfortable doing so with her current employer, another Labour MP.She encouraged disabled people to disclose their impairments once they had secured employment because it provides them with more legal protection, but she said there was still a need for legal reforms to improve protection in the workplace.Issues around mental health were widely debated and discussed at the conference, but mostly focusing on cuts to health services. The party’s National Policy Forum has produced what it calls a “priority issue document” on mental health, which says the party is “firmly committed to making mental health a priority and ensuring that parity of esteem between mental and physical health becomes a reality”.One delegate told the health and care debate at the conference about the disproportionate number of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people with mental health issues. He said: “We can’t sit back, comrades, and do nothing in the face of a mental health crisis, when the majority of transgendered young people either attempt or commit suicide.”Another delegate stressed the impact of austerity and inequality on mental health and reducing life expectancy.A third delegate thanked Corbyn for his “parity of esteem” pledge, and said she had received her first inpatient treatment earlier this year. She won a standing ovation – including from Corbyn – after she disclosed her own experience of the NHS.She said: “I can’t tell you how invaluable their work was. Without them, I don’t think I would be standing here today before you.“I would like to ask [Tory health secretary] Jeremy Hunt: do you value nurses so little… do you value the lives of people like me so little that you’re willing to put their lives at risk?”Shadow health secretary Diane Abbott told the conference: “Labour in government will put the money behind this.“The delays in accessing timely mental health treatment around the country are unacceptable.“We want an end to shame and an end to the tacit acceptance that the mentally-ill are somehow second-class citizens in our healthcare system.”last_img read more

River Place using different method for flood proofing

first_img “On Water Street, everything goes underwater. I mean, it’s in the name. There’s not a situation down here where you can consider, ‘well you know, maybe it won’t flood.’ No you on water street, it’s going to flood. So it’s just a matter of making sure you design your building to accommodate the known flooding event that’s going to happen,” Sparks said.Sparks says there are other buildings in downtown that follow the same protocol and says this method does not affect insurance rates either. In 2016, a representative for the city made a request to the board of adjustment so that River Place could be exempt from flood proofing requirements. Instead, it would use a different method approved by FEMA, using steel doors to block off water. South Brunswick parents talk growing vaping trend and how to get ahead

first_img About four years ago, Stephanie Hall’s son learned about vaping.“It became a growing issue from year, to year, to year,” said Hall.Hall heads the parents advisory council at South Brunswick High School. Hall remembers the first conversations she had about the devices.Related Article: Ohio governor signs ban on abortion after 1st heartbeat“I would say what are the risks and he would say ‘well there aren’t really any mom.’”She says it took until his senior year to realize the toll it was taking. Speaking before parents and students, Hall hoped many took her message of awareness that the devices in fact have negative impacts on young minds. In fact, the CDC considers vaping highly addictive and can harm brain development for teens.“Yeah it was originally designed to help people who were getting off of cigarettes,” said Hall. “It was never intended for children who never even smoked.”“We see it everyday in our schools,” said Principal Chip Hodges standing in front of a chalk board with more than a dozen e-vape devices taped on it.Principal Hodges says finding devices of all shapes and sizes is a daily task for him and school staff.“The vaping is what I call epidemic proportions,” said the principal.State and health officials are agree. Many new laws or add ons to existing laws came through the 2018 General Assembly to try to have enforcement up-to-date. A National Youth Tobacco survey reported a 78 percent increase in the e-vape brand JUUL being used by teens from 2017 to 2018.“We don’t know what these devices do to us. The uncertainty should be enough to discourage us,” said high school student Marissa Pendergast.Students at South Brunswick recorded in a study say they access the products mostly from other friends.“How long is it going to take for us to find out how dangerous this is for our children and will it be too late,” asked Hall. The state director at the Tobacco Prevention and Control branch of the NCDHHS says e-cigarettes contains nicotine, possibly double that of a cigarette.Companies like JUUL have been impacted by the FDA and Surgeon General’s crackdown on the devices getting in the hands of younger consumers. JUUL has said they are working to reduce that pull towards teenage customers. SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — It’s a growing trend, but in the eyes of school administrators, it’s now a growing epidemic. New findings reveal a massive growth in e-cigarettes along high school hallways. This has parents in Brunswick County concerned enough to meet Monday night.- Advertisement – last_img read more

Add the butter, hot sauce, and herbs and remove from the heat. Season with salt and serve immediately out of the pan.Green Pea Emulsion½ cup white wine (good enough to drink)1 tablespoon finely minced shallot1 bay leaf1 small sprig thyme1 small sprig oregano1 cup low sodium vegetable or fish stock1 tablespoon cream½ cup blanched English pea puree (blanched and pureed smooth on a food processor)1 tablespoon lemon juice¼ pound unsalted cold butterSalt to finishIn a nonreactive 1-2 quart saucepot over low heat, add the white wine, shallot, bay leaf, thyme, oregano, and reduce by half. Add the stock and reduce by half. Turn the heat very low and add the cream, the butter, and the lemon juice. Stir constantly while the butter melts to incorporate, while being vigilant in making sure the mixture never gets hot enough to boil. Once the butter has been fully melted and incorporated, season and strain through a fine mesh strainer. Farming practices have become cleaner and have in turn yielded a cleaner taste. We then pat the fillets dry with a clean cloth, roll it into great cornmeal, and pan-fry it in a cast-iron skillet. The result is a comfort food that has great balance and reminds me of camping in the summertime in Georgia as a child.  It has made believers out of the most skeptical former catfish haters.Pat the catfish fillets dry with a clean towel and press firmly into the seasoned cornmeal. Heat the cast iron skillet over medium flame and add the corn or peanut oil. The oil should shimmer when ready for the fillets from the heat changing the viscosity. Carefully add the catfish fillets one at a time. Gently brown on the first side and flip. Pour off excess oil out of the skillet and place in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes. Serve the catfish immediately out of the oven. (Make sure you have a dry towel on hand. That handle will be hot!).Cooking the succotash…Succotash is a versatile satisfying vegetable side that allows you to highlight the best ingredients of summer. You can easily substitute ingredients, but some standard ingredients associated with this classic vegetable dish are okra, corn, field peas or butterbeans, tomatoes, and sometimes bacon or ham. I love finishing my succotash just before serving with almost any type of fresh herbs (dill, mint, oregano, fennel tops, or parsley)(with the exception of cilantro) and a small pat of butter and a dash of hot sauce.last_img read more

Any person who breaks the law (…) should know they can be held responsible,” interior minister Elzbieta Witek said on Twitter on Sunday.Videos posted on Twitter show men attacking participants in the march, including a woman, and shouting anti-LGBT insults. Some of the attackers were wearing football club t-shirts.Last year during an equality march in Lublin, another eastern Polish city, activists were hounded by groups of men, who were dispersed by riot police firing tear gas. This year, at a political rally before European Parliament elections, PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski urged Poles to vote for what he called “the only party that gives a 100% guarantee that our values will be protected”.LGBT rights constitute foreign values that pose “a real threat to our identity, to our nation”, he said. Some observers see parallels with the party’s 2015 campaign, when it deployed anti-immigrant rhetoric.“One should condemn any act of hooliganism and I condemn it doubly (…) Firstly because you can’t beat, yank people under any circumstances,” PiS legislator Marcin Horala told broadcaster TVN24.“But also because nothing helps promote LGBT in Poland as much as giving them the role of victim, as was the case in Bialystok,” he added.PiS took power in 2015 and remains popular thanks to generous welfare payouts, low unemployment and its nationalist rhetoric.A newspaper supporting PiS was criticised in recent days by the U.S. and British embassies for its plan to put an “LGBT-free zone” sticker on one of its editions.WhatsApp 1 of 6 SharePrint People attend the first Pride Parade in the city of Bialystok, Poland July 20, 2019 in this video grab taken from social media July 21, 2019. Apple Removes Bose Headphones From Stores Online Site

first_imgAdvertisement Looks like the battle between Bose and Beats by Dre parent Apple has moved  to a place where it really hurts — the stores. This is because the Bose headphones can no longer be found in Apple stores, not online, nor at the mall.Other competing brands of headphones remain in Apple’s online store, including high-end models from Sennheiser, Bowers & Wilkins and Marshall. – Advertisement – It should be noted that two months after Apple announced it would acquire Beats for $3 billion, Bose sued, claiming that Beats had infringed on five of its patents for noise-canceling headphones. The company also lodged a complaint with the International Trade Commission, seeking to halt the sale and import of certain Beats products. That lawsuit was dismissed on Oct. 10, after the two parties reached a settlement. Terms were not disclosed.A publicity battle between the premium headphone brands has also been playing out on TV.Bose secured an exclusive marketing deal with the National Football League that kept all other manufacturers’ headphones off camera on game day, from the moment players set foot on the field up to 90 minutes after the final whistle. However, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick flouted the rule during a post-game press conference, and said he was slapped with a $10,000 fine by the league. Other players followed suit, including Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, Seattle Seahawks star Richard Sherman and Cowboys defender Barry Church. An NFL spokesperson subsequently issued a statement saying players could tape over the Beats brand to avoid being disciplined.Via Recodelast_img read more

A follow-up winner for the column at Punchestown yesterday – our recommendation Moyle Park winning the bumper at 7/4.It was a hard fought three quarters of a length success but Star Sports pay out on what wins and not how far. We’ll be back at Punchestown later in the week but we must pay due attention to the second Champions League semi-final tonight and after last night what surely could have the potential of an all-German final at Wembley.Barcelona’s 4-0 defeat at the hands of Bayern astonished most of us – even if inept refereeing (yet again) gifted them at least one, possibly two goals. But don’t get me started on that rant again. Check out the “Suarez and Friends” blog.Barcelona, for our money, never looked up for it. They were jaded throughout. Perhaps just nothing more than the affects of a long hard season and the constant expectation on their (and in particular Messi’s) shoulders for 3-0, 4-0, 5-0 wins whenever and whoever they play. Even in his prime The Bank Of Roger Federer failed to pay out on rare occasions and the Bank Of Barcelona had their doors slammed firmly shut last night. In the domestic Bundesliga, Bayern and Dortmund have dominated this season and Dortmund will look to build up an advantage to take to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium for the return leg against Real Madrid.Borussia Dortmund scrambled home against Malaga in a desperate finish in the quarter finals and will have to raise their game but we think on balance they’ll just edge a tight match. These London buses… they do come along in three’s, don’t they?STAR FORECAST(stake between 0.5 and 10 points)4 points win DORTMUND to beat REAL MADRID(+7 points Tuesday)Agree OR disagree?
