Olympiacos defeats Barcelona on historic evening

first_imgIt was a historic night at the Peace and Friendship Stadium, where local heroes Olympiacos Piraeus defeated FC Barcelona Lassa 59-52. Vassilis Spanoulis scored 15 points and dished 6 assists – including the 1,000th assist of his storied EuroLeague career – to lead the Reds. The Olympiacos’ defensive effort held Barcelona to a record-low in scoring in the competition. The result set both teams’ record at 4-3. Erick Green added 9 points off the bench and Khem Birch collected 7 rebounds for the winners, who forced Barcelona into 17 turnovers. Jonathan Holmes led Barcelona with 13 points and 9 rebounds and Tyrese Rice added 11 points, but struggled with his shooting and missed all 5 of his three-point attempts. The visitors turned to Ante Tomic early, but he lasted less than five minutes before taking a seat with his second foul. Spanoulis was sharp in pushing the Reds to an 11-9 edge. Spanoulis followed his 1,000thcareer assist with a pull-up three pointer for a 19-12 advantage. Holmes amassed 10 first-quarter points to keep Barcelona close. The scoreboard showed 21-16 after 10 minutes. He sent an alley-oop assist to Dorsey for a slam, then darted inside for a layup and then sank 2 free throws to trim the deficit to 39-34 midway through the quarter. Threes by Daniel Hackett and Green kept the Reds in charge. Ioannis Papapetrou put-back and three-pointer gave Olympiacos a 49-38 cushion through three quarters. Madrid played a lot of zone defense and did not allow the hosts to get into a rhythm. A floater by Calathes made it 21-19 after 10 minutes, and James hit a triple to push the margin to 26-19 early in the second. Madrid answered with a 0-7 run that included a three from Rudy Fernandez. HC asks Sports Ministry Secy to review selection process for Taekwondo in Asian Games

first_imgNew Delhi, Jul 26 (PTI) The Delhi High Court today appointed the secretary of Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs as one-man panel for reviewing the selection of sports persons to represent India in Taekwondo in the upcoming 18th Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.Justice Vibhu Bakhru said the decision of the secretary on the selection process shall be considered final and would not be contested. The court also asked the secretary to consider the case of six Taekwondo players, who have moved the court, and other sports persons who might approach him.Two women and four men Taekwondo players have approached the high court seeking direction to the Union Ministry of Sports and other authorities to include their names in the list of players who would represent India in the Asian Games. The petitions claimed that selection of the sports persons has not been conducted in a manner it should have been done, and the concerned National Sports Federation has been suspended and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has not held any trials. They sought direction to the Sports Authority of India to conduct the selection trials for Taekwondo players, and to the Sports Ministry to allow the selected players to participate and represent the country in the Asian Games to be held from August 18 to September 2.Advocate Saurabh Jain, appearing for two women players Purva Dattatray Dixit and Kashish Malik, said there was no representation from India for Taekwondo (Kyurogi) in all categories and since the two women were the top ranking players in their respective categories, they should be sent to represent the country in the Asian Games.advertisementThe court noted it was apparent that there were several other players placed higher in the ranking in Taekwondo and have not been considered, and it appeared that it was not feasible to now conduct any trials. Additional Solicitor General Maninder Acharya said the secretary of Sports ministry shall examine the averments in the petitions and the process adopted for selection of the Indian contingent, and take a comprehensive view. The court said, “Accordingly, the secretary, Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs is appointed by this court to act as a one-man committee for reviewing the selection of the sports persons to represent India in the sport of Taekwondo”. It said the secretary shall consider the matter expeditiously within two days and granted liberty to the players to appear before him tomorrow. The court clarified that this order was passed in the peculiar facts and circumstances of the cases as the necessary process for selection has not been carried out, and the IOA has also failed to select the requisite number of participants. It said the order was passed in the “larger interest of the nation to ensure that the best team represent this country in the sport of Taekwondo”. When the counsel for IOA objected to the secretary deciding the matter, the judge said the contention was “wholly unmerited” and it was clear that the IOA had failed in its function to ensure that proper selection was made and must bear the responsibility of its failure. The court listed the matter for further hearing on July 30.According to the petition, 24-year-old Dixit is a Kyorugi Taekwondo player for ‘under 49 kg’ in senior category (female) and has participated in various national and international events since 2010, and has secured several medals, including four gold medals in international events.Eighteen-year-old Malik is a Kyorugi Taekwondo player for ‘under 57 kg’ in senior category (female) and has participated in various national and international events since 2015 and bagged several medals, including two gold and a silver in international events, the petition added. Meet Ehsan Khan, the Hong Kong bowler who dismissed MS Dhoni for a duck

first_imgThere was cheers all around the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday even though India’s centurion Shikhar Dhawan was dismissed trying to up the ante. The reason for the cheer, MS Dhoni was walking out to bat.But the cheers suddenly turned to sorrow. The reason, Dhoni walked back to the pavilion and that too for a duck.In India’s 2018 Asia Cup opener against Hong Kong, Dhoni tried to force the issue as he came down the track but was deceived. He ended up getting a faint edge as the Hong Kong keeper took a sharp catch to send back the former India captain. The perpetrator (read bowler) was Ehsan Khan, a Pakistan-born 33-year-old off-spinner.Earlier in the match he had dismissed Rohit Sharma, who is leading Team India in the tournament after regular captain Virat Kohli opted to take a break. Ehsan Khan reacts after getting the wicket of MS Dhoni (AP Photo)So who is Ehsan Khan?Playing just his 15th one-day international, Ehsan made his first-class cricket debut against Ireland in the 201517 ICC Intercontinental Cup, and played his first ODI against Scotland – where he took 2/28. His best performance tough came against Afghanistan as he took 4 wickets for just 33 earlier this year in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier at Bulawayo. After that performance Ehsan, named the match of the match, had said that Hong Kong “showed we can beat any team”. After the end of the qualifiers, though Hing Kong failed, Ehsan was named the ‘rising star’ of his team by ICC.advertisementHe has taken a total of 47 first class wicket from 22 matches and 11 wickets from 4 List-A games. In T20Is, Ehsan has a total of 6 wickets from 4 matches since making his debut against Ireland in 2016. Apart from the Hong Kong national team, Ehsan has played for Diasqua Little Sai Wan Cricket Club in Hong Kong and also for Rawalpindi in Pakistan. In Hong Kong’s first match of the Asia Cup, Ehsan had dismissed Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam, finshing the game with figures of 2/34.India went from 240/2 in 40 overs to 285/7, despite Dhawan scoring his 14th ODI ton as the other middle-order faltered once again, thanks to some clever bowling by the Hong Kong spinners. As for Dhoni, the frowns on the World Cup-winning captain’s brow must be growing especially given his recent slump in form. His strike rate in the recent tour of England had brought a lot of criticism, and doubts being raised over his finishing abilities during the limited-overs series.Dhoni’s slow batting led to boos from the stands in Lord’s as India failed to chase down England’s set target of 323 in the second ODI.Though the world stands divided on questions of Dhoni’s participation in the 50-over World Cup in 2019, the answer might just have to wait for the time now.last_img read more

India name unchanged 12-man squad for 2nd ODI against West Indies

first_imgIndia have announced an unchanged 12-man squad for the second ODI against the Windies which will be played on Wednesday (October 24).India won the first match in Guwahati on Sunday as they comfortably beat the Windies by 8 wickets at the Baraspara Cricket Stadium to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The Indian team management has decided not to tinker with the winning combination and named the same set of players for the next game which will be played in Visakhapatnam. The final XI however, will be announced by captain Virat Kohli at the toss.Team India for 2nd ODI, Visakhapatnam – Virat Kohli (C), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Rishabh Pant, MS Dhoni (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Umesh Yadav, Mohammad Shami, Khaleel Ahmed #TeamIndia #INDvWIBCCI (@BCCI) October 23, 2018The last game saw Kohli leading from the front and along with vice-captain Rohit Sharma, helped India gun down a target of 323 with 47 balls to spare.Rohit (152*) and Kohli (140) both scored centuries as India romped home with 47 balls left to spare. Rohit and India’s new No.4 Ambati Rayudu (22*) remained unbeaten to end the game a tad early than many would have expected. The loss would remind West Indies that maybe 322 is not the problem but it is the bowling that needs to fire against an Indian team that shows no mercy to average bowling.Kohli and Rohit broke a hoard of records along the way.The hundred was Kohli’s fourth in ODIs in 2018. Mary Kom says her original birth date is November 24 & not March

first_imgSix-time World Champion MC Mary Kom turned 36 on Saturday (November 24). After winning the title at the World Women Boxing Championship here at KD Jadhav hall, May Kom shared that it was her birthday. However, what is strange that her birth date mentioned on the Olympic website and other official sites, including her Rajya Sabha membership card, is March 1.”I feel very happy it is a special day (birthday). Couldn’t have asked for more,” Mary told Mail Today soon after her summit clash.Asked about the error in the birth date, Mary told the paper that it was a mistake done during the submission of her documents by her uncle.”The mistake happened during my childhood. My uncle filled up the form and nobody noticed it that time. We were also not that popular, so we let it go as it is. However, the year (1983) was right.”It will be interesting to see how the Government of India reacts to it. In all the official documents, her birth date mentioned is March 1.At 36, Mary Kom is a living legend. The mother of three has already set her eyes on making a mark in the Tokyo Olympics. A difficult challenge, to put it mildly, Mary Kom will be punching much above her weight, so to speak, at an age when a retirement is an honourable option.”I am looking at competing in the Olympics and I know people’s expectations and I am taking it in a positive stride and working towards it,” she added.advertisementMary Kom had bagged the bronze medal in 2012 Olympics in London in the flyweight category after losing to Great Britain’s Nicola Adams 6-11 in the semi-final. She had sought to claim her gold at Rio in 2016, but unfortunately failed to qualify for the event. Following it, many had criticised her while retirement questions had popped up.”I have answered my critics who were hoping I didn’t win, people who questioned me, asked when I would retire- I have answered all,” she said.Asked about her thoughts on coaching, Mary Kom replied, “I will train other girls but only after I retire, but it is very difficult to have another Mary Kom.”last_img read more

But Test cricket is my priority, it’ll always remain my priority,” Pujara had said after the Sydney Test. Also Read | Love watching Pujara bat, there’s a lot to learn from him: Shubman GillAlso Read | Best Indian side I have been part of, says Cheteshwar Pujara after series-winning 521 runsAlso Read | Cheteshwar Pujara just can’t dance: Watch India stars celebrate historic winAlso Read | Pujara frustrated top-class Aussie attack to the point of submission: Ian Chappelllast_img read more

Chasing 160 for a win, Mandhana hit her seventh T20I fifty but lacked support from other batters and India were bundled ou for 136.Mithali Raj was left out of the playing XI in the semi-final against England at the World Twenty20 in the West Indies. Mithali Raj has played 85 T20Is and scored 2283 runs at 37.42″We are looking to give chance to the young girls. We only have these 3 overseas games and then we are playing more in Indian conditions. That’s the reason we are giving chances to the young girls,” Kaur said after the match.Mithali’s place in the T20 side has been under the scanner due to her slow strike-rate and waning fielding abilities which led to her being dropped from the World T20 semi-final.The ouster from the playing XI led to a public spat with Committee of Administrators (CoA) member Diana Edulji, whom she accused of trying to “finish her career” along with interim chief coach Ramesh Powar.advertisementPowar didn’t get an extension in his role and WV Raman was appointed coach before the New Zealand series.Meanwhile, Mithali Raj in all likelihood will bring down curtains on her T20 International career after the home series against England. However, she will continue to play the 50-overs format where she is still the captain of the side. Also Watch:last_img read more
