BYU’s football team will be lacking some depth when it takes on Nebraska in its season opener on Sept. 5. The school announced Tuesday morning that it will be disciplining “10-ish” players for the game against the Huskers due to their role in the brawl against Memphis. Following the Miami Beach Bowl on Dec. 22, many of the Cougars and Tigers’ players got into a severe scuffle on the field. Multiple punches were thrown, faces were battered – it was an incredibly ugly scene.BYU will discipline “10-ish” players for their role in brawl with Memphis in their opener vs. Nebraska. Still not saying who, however.— Tim Griffin (@TimGriffinBig12) March 3, 2015Here’s video of the brawl. With star quarterback Taysom Hill returning, BYU was expected to be a tough test for Nebraska in Week 1. The Cougars’ chances of pulling off an upset in Lincoln took a decent hit today, though.

Home improvement retail giant Lowe’s has announced it will close 31 locations — mostly under the Rona banner — in Canada. In a release, the company said the stores being closed are under-performing.“While decisions that impact our associates are never easy, the store closures are a necessary step in our strategic reassessment as we focus on building a stronger business,” Marvin R. Ellison, Lowe’s president and CEO, said in a statement.“We believe our people are the foundation of our business and essential to our future growth, and we are making every effort to transition impacted associates to nearby Lowe’s stores.”Three stores in the GTA have been marked for closure: two Rona locations in Mississauga and the Lowe’s at Centrepoint Mall.In total, there are 31 sites that are closing: two regional support centers, a truss plant, a block plant and 27 stores. Within those 27 stores there are 24 RONA stores, 1 Reno-Depot store and two Lowe’s locations.Lowe’s said is expects to close the impacted stores by the end of the company’s 2018 fiscal year — Feb. 1, 2019.There has been no word on how many jobs will be lost due to these closures. In addition to the 31 Canadian locations, Lowe’s is also planning to close 20 locations in the United States. It was just over a year ago that Lowe’s bought fellow Canadian home improvement retailer Rona. For a complete list of locations in the U.S. and Canada that will be closing, click here. The story above was updated to reflect incorrect information related to the Canadian closures.
VICTORIA — Ride-hailing companies could begin operations in British Columbia by next fall under legislation introduced today.Transportation Minister Claire Trevena says the government’s bill strikes a balance between meeting consumer demand and protecting public safety.Among other things, the bill would give the Passenger Transportation Board the power to accept applications and set terms and conditions for licences covering taxis and ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft.It would also set rates and determine the number and coverage areas of the services. The legislation would see the creation of a legislative committee to review and make changes to the system as well.Green Leader Andrew Weaver says the NDP’s bill is a step forward, but he questions why the government has chosen to require driver training and class five licences rather than class four, which he says have been used successfully in Quebec.Trevena says the experience of other jurisdictions has been used to develop British Columbia’s legislation, which is aimed at preventing gridlock, maintaining ridership on public transit, and reducing accidents caused by unsafe or inexperienced drivers.Vancouver is one of the few major cities in Canada that does not permit ride-hailing.The New Democrats, Liberals and Greens promised to bringing in ride-hailing during the 2017 provincial election campaign. An all-party committee of the legislature made 32 recommendations last February to help pave the way for ride-hailing.The report highlighted five key areas that needed to be considered when establishing regulations for the industry including pricing, insurance, licensing, and public safety. The committee also recommended updating legislation that regulates the taxi industry to “allow for equitable and fair competition.” The Canadian Press
Kolkata: Two mountaineers from the state on Kanchenjunga expedition — Kuntal Karar and Biplab Baidya — are believed to be dead as the rescue operation to bring them back to the base camp proved futile. The Sherpa team, which was on the rescue job of the two injured Indian climbers Biplab and Kuntal, has returned to Camp-4 of Kanchenjunga, as reported from the base camp. The herculean rescue operation, performed by Sherpa Nirmal Purja and his team on Wednesday, yielded no positive outcome. Also Read – Bengal family worships Muslim girl as Goddess Durga in Kumari PujaUnesh Zirpe, the leader of the expedition team Giripremi from Base Camp, said: “There is almost no hope that any further rescue operation is possible to bring Biplab and Kuntal back to Camp-4 at this stage.” The handling agency has also made it clear that there is almost no possibility that any further rescue effort can save these two lives. Ramesh Ray, another climber from the same team, was rescued by the Sherpas and brought to Camp-4 around 10 pm on Wednesday. His health is on the verge of critical deterioration and he was suffering from altitude sickness leading to HAPE (high altitude pulmonary edema) and snow blindness. Climber Rudraprasad Halder, who was at Camp-4 on Thursday morning, was also suffering from frostbite. Later in the day, both of them were evacuated by rescue helicopter and brought at the base camp. Also Read – Bengal civic volunteer dies in road mishap on national highway”They are undergoing treatment at the base camp but arrangements are being made to hospitalise them as quick as possible considering their deteriorating health condition,” said Ujjal Roy, a member of the advisory committee of the state Youth Affairs department. Biplab, Kuntal, Ramesh, Rudraprasad and Sk Sahabuddin were part of a five-member team from Bengal, who had embarked on the Kanchenjunga expedition. Four of them — Rudraprasad Halder, Ramesh Ray, Sk Sahabuddin and Biplab Baidya — had reportedly reached the summit point on Wednesday morning. However, Biplab and Kuntal fell sick while descending and sought help from an altitude above 8000m. It was believed that Kuntal was suffering from HAPE. One team member (possibly Rudraprasad) sent an SOS to their family around 3:12 pm on Wednesday via GPS device asking for urgent help. The device read an elevation of 8271m. Nirmal Purja with two other Sherpas — Gesman Tamang and Mingma David Sherpa — responded promptly to the request assuring a rescue operation from an altitude of 8200m. The sherpas were on their way down from the summit of Kanchenjunga.
The weakest division of the American League so far this season is the one that has been the most dominant in recent years: the AL East — featuring the Yankees and Red Sox, the two winningest AL teams since the league expanded to three divisions in 1995.Baltimore is leading the division with a puny 16-14 record, the worst for any division leader in baseball. Four of the AL East’s five teams are being outscored. And it could get even bleaker: All five teams have put up these poor results while facing schedules that are significantly weaker than average. There’s plenty of time for things to turn around; four-fifths of the season remain. Even if just one or two AL East teams get better, that could be enough for the division to win another pennant and even the major-league title.Winning pennants and titles has been the forte of the AL East since the majors reorganized after the 1994-95 players’ strike. Teams from the division have represented 36 percent of all AL clubs but have won 11 of 19 pennants and eight of 10 World Series titles for AL teams — twice as many as any NL division. (NL East teams have won four.) The division has also claimed 71 percent of available AL wild-card slots, twice as many as it would be expected to by chance alone.Much of that postseason success was achieved by New York and Boston, and the division has had plenty of underachieving clubs, too. But the AL East’s overall results stand up nicely, too. Its teams won 51 percent of regular-season games between 1995 and 2013. That understates its success because division games each had winners and losers, so they canceled each other out. Against opponents from outside their division, AL East teams won 52 percent of games, including the same proportion against both intraleague rivals and against NL teams.Surprising early-season results often stem from bad luck: Opposing batters’ grounders find gaps in the infield, and their fly balls sail for home runs, at unsustainable rates. One way to measure this luck is to compare teams’ skill-interactive ERA to their ERA. SIERA tries to control for factors beyond pitchers’ control — so it’s roughly what a pitching staff’s ERA would be if it had the same luck, and fielding ability, of the average team. And all five AL East teams have a SIERA below their ERA. The Yankees’ gap is nearly a run per nine innings. Then again, last year, all five AL East teams also had ERAs worse than their SIERAs. And while that doesn’t appear to have been due to bad fielding, this year most of the AL East clubs have below-average fielding. There’s one more sign that its slow start could mean real trouble for the AL’s worst division. A few days ago, Dave Cameron at FanGraphs calculated teams’ expected scoring margins — based on how well they’ve hit the ball, run the bases, fielded and pitched — relative to their actual scoring margins. If the AL East really has been the victim of hard luck, we’d expect its teams to have better scoring margins than they do. Yet overall, they’ve done about as poorly as expected. Because they’ve won even more than we’d expect by scoring margin, if they keep playing as poorly as they have, their luck — and tougher opponents — could make it even harder for AL East teams to maintain the mediocre level they’ve established so far this season.

The team it faces Saturday might be even better than that Bulldog squad. According to Kenpom.com, North Carolina is the No. 11 team in the nation, one spot ahead of Gonzaga. The Tar Heels have handled a few quality teams to this point, beating Stanford 96-72, Michigan 86-71 and No. 21 Tennessee 78-73. Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann said in watching the film of those wins, it is clear North Carolina is a team that should be making a return trip to the Final Four in 2018.“There’s a reason they’re the No. 5 team in the country,” Holtmann said Thursday. “We’ve watched them play both home and away, they were up on Michigan by 30 with 10 minutes to go. They just can be really, really explosive. Obviously they have a terrific win at Tennessee. Every time you’re watching them play, you’re trying to evaluate things.”But while North Carolina has several big wins on its resume, it also has several standout losses. In its first real test of the season, it was beat down by now-No. 2 Michigan State 63-45, and lost to Wofford 79-75 Wednesday night. The Tar Heels tend to be one of the more dominant teams in the nation across the board, ranking as both a top-20 team by KenPom in both adjusted offensive efficiency (No. 14) and adjusted defensive efficiency (No. 19). But there is one area that could bode well for the Buckeyes. When Ohio State struggles, it is because it gets into turnover trouble. According to KenPom, Ohio State ranks No. 173 in offensive turnover rate. But the Tar Heels have not been a team to force many turnovers this season, ranking only 267th in defensive turnover rate. In North Carolina’s loss to Wofford, it forced just 10 turnovers and scored eight points off those turnovers. But that is one of the only matchups that looks favorable for the Buckeyes. The Tar Heels typically run a zone defense, a scheme that has caused Ohio State fits offensively all season. The Buckeyes also have not dealt with up-tempo teams well. The three teams that have beaten Ohio State — Gonzaga, Butler and Clemson — average just 16.8 seconds per offensive possession this season. The three Power Five teams Ohio State has beaten — Wisconsin, Michigan and Stanford — average 18.2 seconds per offensive possession. The Tar Heels are the seventh-fastest team in the nation on offense, taking just 14.4 seconds on every offensive possession. Ohio State forward Jae’Sean Tate said the team has spent extensive time at practice this week working on transition defense in anticipation for North Carolina’s faster offense.“The way they get the ball up the court so fast even on made-baskets, going to be key trying to make them play in the half-court is basically what we’re going to have to try to do,” Tate said. How will UNC rebound from its loss to Wofford? Both Ohio State and North Carolina wrapped up relatively easy nonconference stretches of their schedules before the upcoming trip to New Orleans. But unlike Ohio State, North Carolina could not handle its business against Wofford, losing 79-75.Wofford shot 43.8 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from beyond the arc overall, but was exceptional in the second half. The Terriers shot 50 percent (17-for-34) from the field, while also maintaining a 40 percent 3-point success rate with 6-of-15 makes. The Tar Heels, by comparison, shot only 36.4 percent from the field and 28 percent from 3-point range during the game. North Carolina, not known to be a 3-point shooting team, fell behind to Wofford and tried to make it all back up in bulk, but went just 5-for-16 from beyond the arc in the second half. The loss to a 25-point underdog could do one or two things to a team: it could serve as sufficient motivation to play as hard as possible the next time out or it could drag down morale. Holtmann and the Buckeyes are preparing for the former, reflecting on how the Tar Heels responded to its first loss of the season to Michigan State.“After they came back from getting beat by Michigan State, they were phenomenal against Michigan and it was incredible. Like I said, up 30 midway through the second half. I think any time you have a veteran team, that’s typically what happens,” Holtmann said. “You look at it, you say, ‘Absolutely, I’m pretty confident that we’re going to get their very best.’”Prediction:UNC wins 76-68

BILLERICA, MA — 18 inmates at the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction spent the past several months as participants in a number of educational and vocational programs offered by the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO). On November 15, they celebrated their achievement in a graduation ceremony attended by their families, jail administrators, a reality TV show winner and a former presidential appointee.Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian presided over the graduation ceremony which featured 20 diploma conferrals for 18 individuals. Five inmates earned their high school equivalency, six graduated from the MSO Culinary Arts program and another nine men graduated from the Custodial Training program.“Steady employment is a critical anchor in a successful reentry plan,” said Sheriff Koutoujian. “That is why we focus our programming on providing marketable skills, and work proactively with leaders in industries that are looking to hire. By gaining a vocational certificate or high school equivalency degree, these men have used their time with us to create better opportunities for themselves and their families.”Graduates heard from two speakers on the value of education and its role in reentry. The first was Michael Botticelli, Executive Director of Boston Medical Center’s Grayken Center for Addiction and the former Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) under President Barack Obama.“Today’s graduation exemplifies that people deserve a second chance and when provided access to the necessary and critical support and resources, they can make significant, positive changes in their lives,” said Director Botticelli. The second commencement speaker was Chef Mike Fucci, a Watertown-based culinary artist and former winner of the competitive cooking show Cutthroat Kitchen on the Food Network. Chef Mike spoke on the importance of perseverance and the opportunities available in the culinary arts.“It was an honor and pleasure to speak to these men who are going in the right direction to turn their life around and have found an interest in culinary arts,” said Chef Mike. “I wish them all the best in their journey to the culinary world. I am looking forward to working with the Sheriff’s Office in the future.”The MSO Culinary Arts course is a 360 hour training program on sanitation, equipment, food preparation and basic baking skills. Participants earn a certificate from Shawsheen Regional Technical High School and 12 credits at Middlesex Community College to jumpstart their culinary education. Likewise, the Custodial Training program is a two month course that familiarizes each student with the handling, care and dispensing of cleaning materials as well as OSHA standards for the industry. Graduates earn a Green Guard certification through the Billerica-based Durkin Company and maintenance certifications through Minuteman International. For more information on the programs offered at the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office, please visit https://www.middlesexsheriff.org/inmate-programming.(NOTE: The above press release is from Middlesex Sheriff’s Office.)Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. The Audiophiliac I noticed that with the Walsh 1000 and F-5015 the soundstage focus varied with my distance from the speakers, but still sounded great as I moved around the room. Ohm speakers are built to order from a broad range of real wood veneer finish options, and if you need the speakers’ size altered Ohm will custom-build speakers for you. Ohm has been one of the best-kept secrets in high-end audio, but maybe that’s about to change. I listened to two different sets of Ohm speakers, the Walsh Tall 1000 ($2,000 per pair) and the F-5015 ($11,000 per pair), and loved the sound. Ohm speakers use a single Walsh Coherent Line Source (CLS) driver that produces bass, midrange and treble frequencies radiating in a 360-degree pattern, and the highest treble frequencies are more directional for precise stereo imaging. While most audiophile speakers are optimized for placement away from walls, Ohm speakers are designed to sound best near walls. The Ohm F-5015 speakers Ohm Acoustics And indeed they do. When I played audiophile recordings the Walsh 1000s’ sound blossomed and projected the music forward into the room. The speakers really do disappear as sources of sound. British experimental pop band Let’s Eat Grandma’s album I, Gemini is loaded with textures and ambient space, and with the Walsh 1000s the music had more room to breathe. The speaker is 38 inches tall and 7.75 inches wide and deep, so it’s not very big, but the room-filling sound is. The main limitation is dynamics; I felt the Walsh 1000 was holding back. Enlarge ImageA look inside the Walsh Coherent Line Source (CLS) driver Ohm Acoustics The much larger Ohm F-5015 had big-speaker grace under pressure thanks to its built-in 15 inch Xtreme Xcursion 500-watt subwoofer. The sound was effortless, and the speakers’ bass prowess at high listening levels was thrilling. That combined with the huge soundstage on Us, the last track on Spoon’s Hot Thoughts album, had me scribbling notes on the sound. This instrumental track has twin saxophones careening in a deeply reverberant soundscape. I’ve played this tune on countless speakers, but they didn’t come close to the spatial ecstasy I encountered over the F-5015s. With these speakers music is a visceral experience. The F-5015 is part of Ohm’s Beta line, new models that are just now coming out. The F-5015 stands 45 inches tall and is 18 inches wide and deep. 2:33 The Ohm Walsh 1000 speaker Ohm Acoustics Ohm Acoustics is one of those perpetually under the radar speaker companies. Founded 1971 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the company specializes in hand-crafted omnidirectional speakers. Chances are you’ve never heard an omni model, so some explanation is in order: Most “normal” box speakers only project sound forward, but Ohm’s omnidirectional Walsh speakers have 360-degree radiation, so they produce a bigger soundfield. Ohm speakers sound great over a much wider area than most audiophile products. You’re not locked down to one “sweet spot.” I recently visited the factory where they not only build new speakers, but also repair and even update older Ohm speakers with the latest technology so customers get the equivalent of a new speaker. Ohm’s customer service extends all the way back to the very first Ohm speakers from the early 1970s! New speakers are sold with a 120-day home trial return policy. Citation: Researchers find blocking Internet pirating sites is not effective (2013, January 10) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2013-01-blocking-internet-pirating-sites-effective.html Credit: Tobias Lauinger et al. Researchers find most BitTorrent users being monitored Explore further This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. There has been a lot of press coverage of pirating on the Internet and corporate efforts to stop it, yet to date, the researchers note, very little if any research has been conducted to determine if the methods used are effective. To find out for themselves, the team began monitoring the availably of thousands of files spread across the Internet via popular file-hosting sites. They noted that as sites were blocked, availability of certain files dropped, but only for a short time – soon other sites picked up the slack and the files formerly found on the blocked site soon became available on other hosting sites, making the blocking action moot.As part of their research, the team also noted that the shutdown of the wildly popular Megaupload site did little to curb the spread of content that users had previously found there. They suggest that if anything, shutting down arguably the most popular file sharing site on the Internet led to a more fractured landscape, with many more small sites sharing files, making stopping piracy even more difficult. The researchers also counted the number of file-sharing sites that are believed to currently host pirated content and found over 10,000 domain names covering more than 5,000 IP addresses. After analyzing their data, the research team concluded that blocking file-hosting sites is ineffective and the practice has done little to lessen the number of illegally shared files available for download from such sites. They suggest that taking away the ability to process payments from such services would likely be much more effective, though they also note the difficulty content providers might find in separating legitimate file-hosting sites from those that share pirated material. Another approach they suggest is that a more reasonable alternative be created that reduces demand, similar to the model that has been created for downloadable music. © 2013 Phys.org More information: Clickonomics: Determining the Effect of Anti-Piracy Measures for One-Click Hosting (paper PDF) (Phys.org)—Researchers at Boston’s Northeastern University have conducted a study on the effectiveness of anti-piracy measures taken by content providers to deter the illegal sharing of files on the Internet. Their research shows that tactics such as blocking sites by seizing domains names does little to curb the sharing of protected files. They suggest that providers instead focus on blocking the income stream such sites generate.
