Bomi Health Admin, Family Test Positive for Ebola

first_imgCredible reports reaching the Daily Observer from Tubmanburg, Bomi County, have revealed that the government-run hospital in Bomi County has been shut down.According to our sources, this is largely because Mr. Sando Sirleaf, the County Health Services Administrator (CHSA), and his family of 10 have been tested positive with the deadly Ebola virus, which is ravishing the nation. One of our sources, who is very close to the hospital, the county’s only referral hospital and major health facility, however, clarified that the hospital’s doors have not been totally closed, but that all of the patients, including admitted ones, have fled. Our source also said the Out-Patient Department (OPD) for routine treatments for malaria and other “common sicknesses,” is also empty, as out-patients have stopped coming to the hospital.According to our source, who has asked to remain anonymous, “Even most of the nurses have now left the hospital because they are afraid for their lives. This is why I said the hospital has now closed.”Our source further disclosed that on Sunday, July 27, the only two out-patients that went to the hospital were the last two remaining family members of the county’s Health Service Administrator, Mr. Sirleaf. The Daily Observer learned  that Mr. Sirleaf and nine members of his family were brought to Monrovia for screening after his son, Sando Sirleaf, Jr., head of the Gayah Hill Health Center, had tested positive with the Ebola virus, which is taking the lives of people every day.Following the screening, our Health Correspondent was reliably told that eight tested positive, are now isolated and are being given supported treatment by health workers. It was the last two, who were confirmed Sunday, as also having come down with the virus.Another source, who is also a Sirleaf, but no relation to Sando, said he is a very good friend of the Bomi Health Service Administrator’s entire family. This source disclosed to us that it was through the auspices of Mr. Sando Sirleaf that the Ghana-based Multi-TV came to Liberia and opened one of its overseas offices here in Monrovia. Also speaking to the Observer, however, Dr. Bernice Dahn, Liberia’s Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Health Minister for Health Services, said that the hospital has not been shut down. With what is happening in the country, she explained, people are just afraid to go to the health facility which, the CMO said, is the wrong decision to make.(For the latest news and updates, follow us at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Liberian-Observer-Online/42279623238.)Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Death mourned of GAA stalwart Jimmy McKelvey

first_imgTHE Communities of Glenties and Fintown are in mourning after the death of noted GAA stalwart Jimmy McKelvey.Jimmy was the President of the Naomh Conaill GAA club and he served for many years as an administrator at club and County Board levels.Jimmy, late of Beaghmore, Fintown, has been Naomh Conaill’s President for a number of years until the time of his passing. It will be an emotional week for the club as the recently-crowned Donegal SFC winners are preparing for Sunday-week’s Ulster senior club final against Kilcoo at Healy Park. Jimmy is a former Chairman of the Donegal Hurling Board and he also served as the Vice Chairman of the Donegal County Board. Naomh Conaill player Jeaic Mac Ceallabhuí is a grand-nephew of Jimmy, who drove a lorry for Donegal County Council for many years and was a popular figure. Naomh Conaill was Jimmy’s big passion and, although in ill health, attended a breakfast morning at Davy Brennan Memorial Park in the lead-up to the Donegal senior football championship final, while he was a strong supporter of the Scór competitions. Club members from Naomh Conaill formed a guard of honour as Jimmy’s remains were brought to his home this afternoon and will again pay their tribute on Sunday at his Funeral Mass. Predeceased by this wife Bernadette, Jimmy is survived by sons Seamus, Tommy, Martin, Damien and daughters Collette and Marie.Jimmy’s funeral mass takes place at 1pm on Sunday at St. Colmcille’s Church, Fintown, with burial afterwards in the adjoining graveyard.Death mourned of GAA stalwart Jimmy McKelvey was last modified: November 22nd, 2019 by Chris McNultyShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:GlentiesJimmy McKelveyNaomh Conailllast_img read more

Sperm Tail is Far More Complex than Thought

first_imgLook into Dr Bergman’s many books, including his recent release, C.S. Lewis: Anti-Darwinist: A Careful Examination of the Development of His Views on Darwinism.(Visited 717 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0 by Dr Jerry BergmanIt has long been believed that the sperm tail is a very simple structure, mostly a tail that wags to propel the sperm forward to reach the egg. Textbooks pictured this structure as a simple string like filament much thinner than a human hair. It was observed that the sperm tail produced harmonic bending waves, thus they were said to cause the sperm to swim like a tadpole. The bigger question then was, what was in the sperm head?Ideas about how sperm cells work date from their discovery by Leeuwenhoek in the 17th century. It was once widely believed that there exists a little person inside of every sperm cell head that traveled to the mother’s womb. The womb’s only role was to feed the child as it grew into a baby. This view was called preformationism. Another preformationist idea held that it was the egg that contained a little person that would begin to grow into a baby once the sperm initiated conception.Preformationist view vs modern structural discoveriesWhen it was recognized that the formation of a child required both a sperm (the smallest cell in the body) and an egg (the largest cell in the body), it was realized that reproduction was far more complex than once thought. Next, the parts of the sperm were studied. Researchers observed that the head contained mostly 23 haploid chromosomes. The first part of the tail, they found, contained mitochondria, the powerhouses of the cell that produce ATP. The rest of the tail consisted of a long thread-like structure. That ‘simple’ thread, the tail, is at last now being revealed by more detailed observations, and it turns out to be amazingly complex!Research around 1968 proved that the sperm tail—properly called a flagellum—consists of a complex system of sliding filaments that are connected by elastic springs resembling cylinder-like structures. The cross-linked filament bundles, found both in cilia and flagella, are ubiquitous in life. Scientists also found evidence that this system contains a scaffold, the function of which is to enable the sperm to swim in the hostile environment necessary to reach the egg in the Fallopian tube. It was also discovered that the basic sperm tail design is very similar in most animal species. No evidence was found for it having evolved from a simple structure in primitive animals to a complex structure in higher animals. The Latest WiggleNew research published in 2017 has discovered that the tail system is far more complex than thought 50 years ago. The front design is vital to transmit information to distant parts of the tail to enable it to function as an effective unit for steering and propelling the sperm to its end goal.[i] The system works by complex elasto-hydrodynamics that we can only briefly outline here. Each tail is programmed to produce slightly different movements in order for the sperm to reach the egg. Scientists learned some of the details of this system partly by physically moving parts of dead sperm tails and designing mathematical models of the motion.Any one movement in this complex sequence appears to be able to trigger motion right through to the distant parts of the tail. One mechanism is counter-bending of a passive flagellum that instigates a compensatory counter-curvature in the section that it is connected to.[ii] The researchers found that movement, which begins near the sperm’s head, is transmitted along the interconnected system, creating controlled oscillatory movement along the tail’s full length.[iii]  The tail “utilizes interconnected elastic spring structures to transmit mechanical information from the front to the distant parts of the tail, helping it to bend appropriately and ultimately swim toward an egg.”[iv]The sections within the tail communicate by sensing the front of the tail near the section that contains the mitochondria. Each section in turn responds to information in front of it to synchronize their motions. The sperm tail mechanism first creates a sliding motion between the filaments inside the cylindrically arranged structure, producing the tail bending. Movement in this complex sequence triggers motion down to the distant parts of the tail. Even with these revelations, researchers are only beginning to understand what goes on. Phys.org says,“The mechanism of a sperm tail first creates a sliding motion between filaments, inside this cylindrically arranged structure, finally resulting in a tail bending, a bit like the piston that converts back and forth motion in to [sic] rotation of the wheel on a train. Any one movement in this complex sequence appears to be able to trigger motion right through to the distant parts of the tail.“The big question now is, are particular springs in the tail coupled-up to transmit specific biomechanical information, and just [do] these ‘rowers’ self-organize?It turns out that the design of the sperm tail is just as complex as the design of the bacteria flagellum, which is well known to Darwin skeptics as an icon of intelligent design. Both are complex well-designed structures, one located on a so-called simple primitive organism, and the other on the sperm of the most complex organism known, namely humans. This example illustrates a trend in biology. When structures do not seem very difficult to evolve, further research shows them to be far more complex and, consequently, much more difficult to explain by unguided evolution. What appear to be simple structures, such as sperm tails, on further investigation are shown to be far more complex, requiring a good understanding of biomechanics, especially elasto-hydrodynamics.If Darwin were alive today, would he still try to explain such complex phenomena with his theory of gradual transmutation via natural selection? In 1859, when he suggested that all life was the result of slow, gradual variations (now thought to come from genetic mistakes), he could not have known the intricacies of sexual reproduction down to the tip of a sperm tail. Those who know today have no such excuse.[i] “The mechanical properties of sperm tails revealed,” https://phys.org/news/2017-05-mechanical-properties-sperm-tails-revealed.html[ii] Coy, Rachel and Hermes Gadêlha. 2017. Spot.Us: Lend Journalism a Helping Hand

first_imgRelated Posts mike melanson Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Tags:#Trends#web A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai…center_img All across the country, newspapers are shuttering and those that remain are closing down bureaus and pulling correspondents left and right. More and more, media outlets are relying on fewer sources for their information because of a lack of funding, but a number of websites have appeared to solve this problem. One such crowd-funded website, Spot.Us, has released a series of new features today in its efforts to save us all from the closed-minded future we’re currently facing.First, here is how it works. Spot.Us gives freelance journalists a space to pitch their story idea, which the website’s users can then invest in. Then, if the story is purchased by a news organization, the donations are reimbursed. It’s like a micro loan service for journalism. The changes to the site include a widget, which allows individuals to show their support for a specific story on third-party websites, social networking connections for Twitter and Facebook, new organization of stories, and a progress blog for each story on the site, to make it easier to keep track. Spot.Us has also said it is open to suggestions for other cities to be a part of, as it only operates in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area, currently. Most importantly, we think, Spot.Us has released a new feature concerning how “community funded” journalism operates on a base level. In an interesting twist, Spot.Us has recognized that there may be more to funding journalism than money itself, and now its users can pledge talent instead of cash. According to the press release on today’s new features, “Citizens who may not have financial resources or want to participate more actively, can now collaborate on a story through an assignment agreed upon by the primary journalist and the citizen.”In addition to the widget, Spot.Us is looking to make an open API in the near future “that would further enable journalists and communities to realize journalism through technology.” We think this could be a great addition, as the project could expand geographically according to where users would support it, in much the same organic fashion as stories are funded. So far, the project has raised over $70,000 and funded 50 stories from more than 700 contributors. We hope these new features will only help to further the cause of community-sourced and -funded journalism. If we aren’t willing to pay after the fact, maybe we will be more willing to pay beforehand, since we’ll know what we’re buying.
