Birth of an Artist: The Writing on the Wall

first_imgWhether past or present, many artistic works (drawing, painting, crafting, weaving etc.) have often been associated with mystery.  From the world famous Mona Lisa painting by Leonardo D’ivinci to the original Vai script of Western Liberia, these great works of art and culture inspire endless debate as to the meanings and their messages.  This concept of mystery in art is not at all a thing of the past.  Mysteries in general form part of traditional life and daily occurrences in places like Liberia, art (and culture) being no exception. For J. Latty M. Zarwu, it all began with a dream and a writing on the wall.  He was a 23-year old money changer trying to make his way through life when it appears his luck ran out.  Tall, dark and rather lanky in his posture, the calm-looking Latty had not much sense of direction as to what he wanted to be in life as a matter of self improvement.  It all changed, however, when one day he hit rock-bottom – or so it seems – and, that very night, experienced a supernatural visitation that set him on the course of what he believes to be his purpose in life. Writing on the Wall“It was on November 28, 2009, when I went to bed in a bad mood, because I didn’t make a sale that week lost all the investment I made in my money changing business. That night in my sleep I saw my self under a tree and a person’s finger drawing on the wall, “ART”; but I couldn’t see that person body only their reflection on the wall. It was very bright and difficult for me to see.  When I asked what was on the wall, he said, “Art”.“These were his exact words he said to me,” Latty narrated: ‘This will heal you, this will heal the world, this will make you rich.’“I asked, How?  He then began drawing on the wall.  I told him, I have no idea about drawing, neither do I have knowledge about painting and there is no money in my pocket.  He told me not to worry, that when I wake up, money would be available.  On that bright morning of November 29, a lady I know just came up to me, saying she had a gift for me.  Wrapped up in her hand was $US25, which she handed to me.“I went back to my room and started to see the possibility of my dream come to reality.  Immediately I purchased some art materials and commenced drawing. My inspiration began to flow from my Creator. (That’s how I call him.)“The most interesting thing that happened was that, all the paintings and drawings I saw in my dream come to my head and I begin doing them.  There were three in all. That same day after drawing, I sold all of them for US$250, and that is how my artistic career began.  My work began to get discovered and was featured in 2010 by Liberia Travel and Life magazine on their cover page.”‘Warrior Artist’Latty graduated in 2014 with an associate’s degree in journalism from the Lincoln College of Profession Studies, in Monrovia. As an artist, he made up his mind to not let his art be only about painting, but to include poetry, music and crafts.  He recently produced a song called ‘Ebola Therapy’, to heal the heart of those who lost friends and loved ones during the Ebola epidemic.  Some of his paintings are featured in the National Museum of Liberia and he recently released a collection of poems in a 10-page pamphlet. Latty also served at the More Than Me Academy as Art Director (2010-2011).“Presently I run an organization called Warrior Art Liberia, which is engaged in training of young people from the ghetto to show them a better life.  At least that is what I was called to do by my creator.  Everybody is a messenger and a warrior but you have to look into yourself and push your mission forward.”“I feel the sense in nature when I’m in my artistic realm,” Latty explains. “Once there, I don’t need noise. The uncertainty of what we see in our work is a very important element in art. Art is a way of sensing the world in depth and finding a way to create an impression on the viewers. Art doesn’t have to be nice, however, you could return to it, at a point in time, in your mind. It will eventually create a question that you need to answer, or to express it some ways that makes you wonder about the outcome of your sensation. Our minds are constantly drawn to mystery because life itself is a mystery in so many ways. Art can convey our spirit so we can be able to remember long after it is gone from sight.”Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Middlesex Sheriffs Office Holds Graduation Ceremony For 18 Inmates

first_imgBILLERICA, MA — 18 inmates at the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction spent the past several months as participants in a number of educational and vocational programs offered by the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO). On November 15, they celebrated their achievement in a graduation ceremony attended by their families, jail administrators, a reality TV show winner and a former presidential appointee.Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian presided over the graduation ceremony which featured 20 diploma conferrals for 18 individuals. Five inmates earned their high school equivalency, six graduated from the MSO Culinary Arts program and another nine men graduated from the Custodial Training program.“Steady employment is a critical anchor in a successful reentry plan,” said Sheriff Koutoujian. “That is why we focus our programming on providing marketable skills, and work proactively with leaders in industries that are looking to hire. By gaining a vocational certificate or high school equivalency degree, these men have used their time with us to create better opportunities for themselves and their families.”Graduates heard from two speakers on the value of education and its role in reentry. The first was Michael Botticelli, Executive Director of Boston Medical Center’s Grayken Center for Addiction and the former Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) under President Barack Obama.“Today’s graduation exemplifies that people deserve a second chance and when provided access to the necessary and critical support and resources, they can make significant, positive changes in their lives,” said Director Botticelli. The second commencement speaker was Chef Mike Fucci, a Watertown-based culinary artist and former winner of the competitive cooking show Cutthroat Kitchen on the Food Network. Chef Mike spoke on the importance of perseverance and the opportunities available in the culinary arts.“It was an honor and pleasure to speak to these men who are going in the right direction to turn their life around and have found an interest in culinary arts,” said Chef Mike. “I wish them all the best in their journey to the culinary world. I am looking forward to working with the Sheriff’s Office in the future.”The MSO Culinary Arts course is a 360 hour training program on sanitation, equipment, food preparation and basic baking skills. Participants earn a certificate from Shawsheen Regional Technical High School and 12 credits at Middlesex Community College to jumpstart their culinary education. Likewise, the Custodial Training program is a two month course that familiarizes each student with the handling, care and dispensing of cleaning materials as well as OSHA standards for the industry. Ohm Acoustics speakers sound bigger than they look

first_img The Audiophiliac I noticed that with the Walsh 1000 and F-5015 the soundstage focus varied with my distance from the speakers, but still sounded great as I moved around the room. Ohm speakers are built to order from a broad range of real wood veneer finish options, and if you need the speakers’ size altered Ohm will custom-build speakers for you. Ohm has been one of the best-kept secrets in high-end audio, but maybe that’s about to change. I listened to two different sets of Ohm speakers, the Walsh Tall 1000 ($2,000 per pair) and the F-5015 ($11,000 per pair), and loved the sound. Ohm speakers use a single Walsh Coherent Line Source (CLS) driver that produces bass, midrange and treble frequencies radiating in a 360-degree pattern, and the highest treble frequencies are more directional for precise stereo imaging. While most audiophile speakers are optimized for placement away from walls, Ohm speakers are designed to sound best near walls. img-0427The Ohm F-5015 speakers Ohm Acoustics And indeed they do. When I played audiophile recordings the Walsh 1000s’ sound blossomed and projected the music forward into the room. The speakers really do disappear as sources of sound. British experimental pop band Let’s Eat Grandma’s album I, Gemini is loaded with textures and ambient space, and with the Walsh 1000s the music had more room to breathe. The speaker is 38 inches tall and 7.75 inches wide and deep, so it’s not very big, but the room-filling sound is. The main limitation is dynamics; I felt the Walsh 1000 was holding back. look-inside-an-ohm-walsh-speakerEnlarge ImageA look inside the Walsh Coherent Line Source (CLS) driver Ohm Acoustics The much larger Ohm F-5015 had big-speaker grace under pressure thanks to its built-in 15 inch Xtreme Xcursion 500-watt subwoofer. The sound was effortless, and the speakers’ bass prowess at high listening levels was thrilling. That combined with the huge soundstage on Us, the last track on Spoon’s Hot Thoughts album, had me scribbling notes on the sound. This instrumental track has twin saxophones careening in a deeply reverberant soundscape. I’ve played this tune on countless speakers, but they didn’t come close to the spatial ecstasy I encountered over the F-5015s. With these speakers music is a visceral experience. The F-5015 is part of Ohm’s Beta line, new models that are just now coming out. The F-5015 stands 45 inches tall and is 18 inches wide and deep. 2:33 The Ohm Walsh 1000 speaker Ohm Acoustics Ohm Acoustics is one of those perpetually under the radar speaker companies. Founded 1971 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the company specializes in hand-crafted omnidirectional speakers. Chances are you’ve never heard an omni model, so some explanation is in order: Most “normal” box speakers only project sound forward, but Ohm’s omnidirectional Walsh speakers have 360-degree radiation, so they produce a bigger soundfield. Ohm speakers sound great over a much wider area than most audiophile products. You’re not locked down to one “sweet spot.” I recently visited the factory where they not only build new speakers, but also repair and even update older Ohm speakers with the latest technology so customers get the equivalent of a new speaker. Ohm’s customer service extends all the way back to the very first Ohm speakers from the early 1970s! New speakers are sold with a 120-day home trial return policy. You might get scammed if you use a voice assistant to call

first_img1:22 Share your voice Comment Now playing: Watch this: It might not be wise to ask your voice assistant for customer service numbers.  Tyler Lizenby/CNET If you ask your voice assistant to find and call a company’s customer service number, there’s a chance you’ll end up connecting with scammers instead. Voice assistants like Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant are being tricked into picking up fraudulent support phone numbers created by scammers, warned the Better Business Bureau on Friday. Con artists create fake numbers then bump them to the top of search results, according to the group. This could lead to Siri, Alexa or Google Assistant accidentally picking up a scam number when you do voice search. If you do call a phony customer service number, the BBB warned that the “representative” might ask for you to pay for something via wire transfer or prepaid debit card. They might even ask for remote access to your computer or tell you to visit an unfamiliar website, the group said.”We work hard to fight against spammers and protect people from scams. When these fake numbers are reported, we remove them,” a Google spokesperson said in an email. Google said that it designs its systems to prioritize authoritative sources and work to prevent scams from being surfaced, but the systems aren’t 100% perfect. When the company receives reports that scam phone numbers are being highlighted in its products, it’ll remove them, according to the spokesperson. To protect yourself, the BBB suggests looking up a customer service number based on a company’s contact information on your bill or in your email or directly from the company’s website.
