McCarthy, King lead the way for Scorpions

first_imgSolid half-centuries from Andre McCarthy and season debutant Brandon King highlighted the first day of the fourth-round WICB/Digicel First-Class Championship clash between Jamaica Scorpions and Trinidad and Tobago Red Force at Sabina Park yesterday. McCarthy, who recently returned from Sri Lanka with the West Indies ‘A’ team, scored a patient top-score of 82, while the attacking King, a former West Indies Under-19 representative, hit a boundary-filled 78, as the Scorpions, winning the toss and electing to bat, posted an improved 314 in their first innings. The Red Force, in their response, closed on 35 for two at the close of play. Heading into the match with scores of 36, two, one, one and 22, and one of several Scorpion batsmen who have been struggling to make their mark, the 29-year-old McCarthy struck five fours and six sixes off 137 balls. King, in the meantime, has been a consistent performer in local competitions but has also been struggling to make the first team. Yesterday, he found his best form and slammed 10 fours and three sixes off a mere 87 balls. The pair also put on a stand of 139 runs for the fourth wicket, the highest of the innings. The second highest was that of the second wicket between McCarthy and number three batter Jermaine Blackwood, who made 34. They put on 61 for the second wicket. The other specialist batsmen, openers John Campbell and Shacaya Thomas, made 33 and 11, respectively, while wicketkeeper Devon Thomas, batting at number six, got seven. The Red Force were led in the field by promising all-rounder Roshon Primus, who, bowling seamers, claimed three wickets for 32 runs off nine overs. He was supported by Jamaica-born left-arm fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell, and another West Indies returnee, part-time off-spinner Jason Mohammed, who picked up two wickets each. The Red Force, in their turn at bat, and after facing 5.2 overs, were then jolted in late afternoon by leg-spinner Damion Jacobs, who, after 1.2 overs has figures of two for seven. Emerging West Indies batsman Kyle Hope will resume today on 15 when play starts at 10 a.m. SCOREBOARD SCORPIONS 1st Innings J. Campbell c Hope b Primus 33 S. Thomas c wk Katwaroo b Primus 11 J. Russia lifts World Cup ban on German journalist

first_img0Shares0000“The Russian side has since informed us that @hajoseppelt can at least travel to the World Cup. Let’s continue to push for free reporting,” Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Twitter.BERLIN, Germany, May 15 – Russia has granted a football World Cup visa to the German journalist banned after he broke the story on Russia’s state-sponsored doping scandal, Berlin said Tuesday.“The Russian side has since informed us that @hajoseppelt can at least travel to the World Cup. Let’s continue to push for free reporting,” Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Twitter. German journalist Hajo Seppelt’s documentaries on doping among Russian athletes sparked a storm and ended up with Russia being banned from this winter’s Pyeongchang Olympic games. On Friday, it emerged that his application for a visa, submitted by public regional broadcaster SWR, was rejected as he was apparently on a persona non grata list in Russia.Moscow did not specify the reason but Seppelt himself said the “uncovering of the state doping system has had such great impact for Russia that it felt that it needed to take such measures”.News of the ban sparked an outcry in Germany, and Berlin on Monday called Moscow’s decision to ban Seppelt “wrong”.The German government also warned that it “puts Russia as a host in a bad light if the freedom of the press and of opinion is curtailed before the eyes of the world.”Earlier Tuesday, German Football Federation chief Reinhard Grindel said he had spoken with FIFA boss Gianni Infantino to take up the case personally with Russia.“I told him that I hoped that he would personally get in touch with the Russian government,” Grindel said.Russia was already a disputed choice when it was handed the World Cup in a closely-watched 2010 vote that has since been tainted by bribery charges. But the row over Seppelt’s visa had further roiled an already controversial tournament which kicks off in June.FIFA said on Monday that it had already approved Seppelt’s accreditation request to cover the World Cup.“Generally speaking, the freedom of the press is of paramount importance to FIFA and we always aim to provide media representatives with the best possible conditions for coverage of all FIFA events,” FIFA said in a statement. The dispute also came just days before German Chancellor Angela Merkel is due to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, who in recent years has clashed repeatedly with Western leaders on a litany of issues including the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

Ohm Acoustics speakers sound bigger than they look

first_img The Audiophiliac I noticed that with the Walsh 1000 and F-5015 the soundstage focus varied with my distance from the speakers, but still sounded great as I moved around the room. Ohm speakers are built to order from a broad range of real wood veneer finish options, and if you need the speakers’ size altered Ohm will custom-build speakers for you. Ohm has been one of the best-kept secrets in high-end audio, but maybe that’s about to change. I listened to two different sets of Ohm speakers, the Walsh Tall 1000 ($2,000 per pair) and the F-5015 ($11,000 per pair), and loved the sound. Ohm speakers use a single Walsh Coherent Line Source (CLS) driver that produces bass, midrange and treble frequencies radiating in a 360-degree pattern, and the highest treble frequencies are more directional for precise stereo imaging. While most audiophile speakers are optimized for placement away from walls, Ohm speakers are designed to sound best near walls. img-0427The Ohm F-5015 speakers Ohm Acoustics And indeed they do. When I played audiophile recordings the Walsh 1000s’ sound blossomed and projected the music forward into the room. The speakers really do disappear as sources of sound. British experimental pop band Let’s Eat Grandma’s album I, Gemini is loaded with textures and ambient space, and with the Walsh 1000s the music had more room to breathe. The speaker is 38 inches tall and 7.75 inches wide and deep, so it’s not very big, but the room-filling sound is. The main limitation is dynamics; I felt the Walsh 1000 was holding back. look-inside-an-ohm-walsh-speakerEnlarge ImageA look inside the Walsh Coherent Line Source (CLS) driver Ohm Acoustics The much larger Ohm F-5015 had big-speaker grace under pressure thanks to its built-in 15 inch Xtreme Xcursion 500-watt subwoofer. The sound was effortless, and the speakers’ bass prowess at high listening levels was thrilling. That combined with the huge soundstage on Us, the last track on Spoon’s Hot Thoughts album, had me scribbling notes on the sound. This instrumental track has twin saxophones careening in a deeply reverberant soundscape. I’ve played this tune on countless speakers, but they didn’t come close to the spatial ecstasy I encountered over the F-5015s. With these speakers music is a visceral experience. The F-5015 is part of Ohm’s Beta line, new models that are just now coming out. The F-5015 stands 45 inches tall and is 18 inches wide and deep. 2:33 The Ohm Walsh 1000 speaker Ohm Acoustics Ohm Acoustics is one of those perpetually under the radar speaker companies. Founded 1971 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the company specializes in hand-crafted omnidirectional speakers. Chances are you’ve never heard an omni model, so some explanation is in order: Most “normal” box speakers only project sound forward, but Ohm’s omnidirectional Walsh speakers have 360-degree radiation, so they produce a bigger soundfield. Ohm speakers sound great over a much wider area than most audiophile products. You’re not locked down to one “sweet spot.” I recently visited the factory where they not only build new speakers, but also repair and even update older Ohm speakers with the latest technology so customers get the equivalent of a new speaker. Ohm’s customer service extends all the way back to the very first Ohm speakers from the early 1970s! New speakers are sold with a 120-day home trial return policy. Nintendo Shipped 274 Million Switch Units in Its First Month

first_img Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now 2 min read Before the Switch launched, Nintendo set a target of shipping 2 million of the hybrid consoles during its first month on sale. We’ve already heard about Zelda: Breath of the Wild selling more copies on Switch than there are Switch, but now we know that Nintendo easily beat its own target, shipping 2.74 million Switch consoles in its first month.Breath of the Wild continues to outpace the hardware, racking up 2.76 million copies sold. This is surely a mix of gamers buying more than one copy (standard and collector’s edition), and those who haven’t been able to get a Switch yet buying Zelda anyway in preparation. If you add in the Wii U version, the total increases to 3.84 million copies. The good news for Nintendo doesn’t end there. According to Eurogamer, the 3DS is continuing to sell well. The 2016 sales report shows 7.27 million 3DS sales, taking the lifetime total to 66 million. Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon played a big part in shifting new hardware, selling 15.44 million copies.Considering the Wii U was never really very popular, it’s impressive to find it still managed to sell 760,000 units last year. Its lifetime sales now sit at 13.56 million, which is easily going to be surpassed by Switch at this rate. Nintendo is predicting another 10 million Switch will sell over the next 12 months, taking the total close to 13 million. That’s lower than the production doubling estimate of 18 million made in March.Surprisingly good sales of the 3DS last year make it clear Nintendo won’t be ending support for its handheld platform any time soon. In fact, the 3DS is expected to sell another 6 million units over the next year. If the rumors of a Mini Switch arriving in 2019 are true, then Nintendo will likely continue supporting the 3DS until then. This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience.
