Two persons are now homeless following a fire which completely destroyed a two-storey house at Lot 102 Section G, Nigg, Corentyne, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) on Monday evening.Flames were seen coming from the upper flat of the house about 20:30h. The couple were not at home since they reportedly departed for their vacation on Saturday.An eyewitness, who lives two houses away, Lucille Ayana explained that the community was at the time experiencing a fluctuation in the power supply. “Me light keep blinking, and then me neighbour get up to see what going on with he appliances and he see the fire and start holla and then me see the fire coming from the house,” the woman said.The fire spread quickly and engulfed the entire building, fuelled by combustible items which were in a storeroom, one resident reported.The Rose Hall Town Fire Service responded with one unit and was able to prevent the blaze from spreading to other buildings. At the time of the fire, there was a heavy rain which also contributed to the fire being contained to one building.When this publication visited the community, the affected couple had not returned from their vacation. The Fire Service is currently investigating the incident and has not confirmed that the fire was electrical in origin.
Credible reports reaching the Daily Observer from Tubmanburg, Bomi County, have revealed that the government-run hospital in Bomi County has been shut down.According to our sources, this is largely because Mr. Sando Sirleaf, the County Health Services Administrator (CHSA), and his family of 10 have been tested positive with the deadly Ebola virus, which is ravishing the nation.One of our sources, who is very close to the hospital, the county’s only referral hospital and major health facility, however, clarified that the hospital’s doors have not been totally closed, but that all of the patients, including admitted ones, have fled.Our source also said the Out-Patient Department (OPD) for routine treatments for malaria and other “common sicknesses,” is also empty, as out-patients have stopped coming to the hospital.According to our source, who has asked to remain anonymous, “Even most of the nurses have now left the hospital because they are afraid for their lives. This is why I said the hospital has now closed.”Our source further disclosed that on Sunday, July 27, the only two out-patients that went to the hospital were the last two remaining family members of the county’s Health Service Administrator, Mr. Sirleaf.The Daily Observer learned that Mr. Sirleaf and nine members of his family were brought to Monrovia for screening after his son, Sando Sirleaf, Jr., head of the Gayah Hill Health Center, had tested positive with the Ebola virus, which is taking the lives of people every day.Following the screening, our Health Correspondent was reliably told that eight tested positive, are now isolated and are being given supported treatment by health workers. It was the last two, who were confirmed Sunday, as also having come down with the virus.Another source, who is also a Sirleaf, but no relation to Sando, said he is a very good friend of the Bomi Health Service Administrator’s entire family. Jamaicans, especially members of the Diaspora, are invited to participate in the first in a series of ‘Customs meets the Community-the Diaspora Online Edition’ forum on Monday, March 11 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.The engagement is a Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) public education initiative designed to engage various stakeholders and clients on customs-related matters.The JCA’s Public Relations and Customer Service Director, LaDonna Manning, told JIS News that persons may participate via their electronic devices by logging onto any of the sites or social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter or Facebook) accessible at www.jacustoms.gov.jm, or through similar channels hosted by the Gleaner or Nationwide 90 FM.The session will be streamed live, thereby enabling persons to submit questions and have them answered immediately. Individuals can also tune in to the Jamaica News Network to watch the session.Panelists and resource persons slated to participate include representatives from the Ministries of Finance and the Public Service, and Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade; National Education Trust; Health for life and Wellness Foundation; the Department of Cooperatives and Friendly Societies; the Plant Quarantine Unit; the Veterinary Services Division; the Trade Board; and the JCA.Ms Manning said one of the initiative’s objectives is to provide a medium for stakeholder feedback.“We want to hear from them [about] the challenges that they might have, and also their recommendations as to how we, as an Agency, can serve them more effectively,” she pointed out.Ms. Manning indicated that the session will serve to inform, educate, and provide clarity on matters regarding charitable items being brought in, among other things.“Persons sometimes wish to send things to charities in Jamaica, but are unaware of the protocols. So this engagement should inform persons of the do’s and the don’ts,” she added.Ms. Manning further indicated that the session will inform members of the Diaspora wishing to return home, about the concessions available to them and the requisite steps to access these benefits.She assured that “persons can expect to leave the session better informed, better educated and much more comfortable doing business with the Agency”.“The JCA will continue to seek various ways to channel information to our customers, wherever they are, [and] to serve them as best we can, as we must continue to be customer-focused, transparent, professional and accountable,” Ms. Manning added.
