Wellington 15-year-olds playing in Babe Ruth State Tournament in Garden City this weekend


first_imgSumner Newscow report — The Wellington 15-year-old Babe Ruth All Stars are the last summer team to represent the community. They are currently playing in the 13-15 year old Kansas State Babe Ruth Tournament in Garden City that starts today and runs through Monday.Wellington played Lakin in the first round game at 2 p.m. today. It the locals won, they will advance to the second round at 1 p.m. on Saturday. If they lose than they will play at 9 a.m. on Saturday.  Other teams in the tournament were: Parsons, Lyons, Frontenac, Cottonwood Valley, Galena and Garden City. The tournament is double elimination.The 15-year-olds were recent winners of the District 3 tournament held at Wellington’s Hibbs-Hooten Field the past weekend. This was a six-team tournament in which Wellington beat fellow Sumner County all-star team Oxford 20-5 in the championship last Sunday.  Wellington pretty much cruised through this tournament. After receiving a first-round bye, Wellington squashed Douglass 22-0. The locals then played Oxford in the first game between the two teams, winning 14-1.After Oxford beat Rose Hill 11-1, Wellington would win the championship game against Oxford.Those receiving special awards in the tournament include:Vs. Douglass: MVP: Chevy Nuss, WOW: Adam Hilts.Vs. Oxford (semifinals): MVP: Dylan Ferguson, WOW: Chevy Nuss.Vs. Oxford (Championship):MVP: Therin Fame. No WOW award was given.Follow us on Twitter.
