first_imgLast year’s marathon. After much discussion, debate and deliberation, the NEW route of this year’s Donegal marathon has been revealed. This event aims to build on last year’s success, and continue to harness the energy, enthusiasm, and groundswell of support for running and outdoor exercise in general among the people of Donegal.Despite last year’s event, there was much discussion about the route of the course. Over the last few months, the Steering Committee has been very busy seeking feedback from those who participated in the first competitive marathon to grace this county in almost forty years. The result of this extensive process is now a route that addresses the issue of that tricky second phase of last year’s full marathon and also brings the competitors back in and onto the streets of Letterkenny for the final stages of the full marathon. These decisions will ultimately add to the excitement of the event and serve to make for an unprecedented public spectacle of personal endeavour and community spirit on the streets of Letterkenny, the likes of which is seldom seen on such a grand scale. This is the People’s Marathon; a marathon organised by the people, for the people, and supported by the people. Donegal can stand proud to recognise the achievements of so many of its residents in organising, supporting, and completing such a celebration of stamina, determination, and the strength of the human spirit. We also look forward to welcoming like-minded people from further afield who wish to tackle the challenges posed by Ireland’s newest competitive marathon.Last year, many of the participants were taking part in this type of event for the very first time; either walking the Half, running the Half, or running the Full.We hope that we can all come together this year to make the marathon Faster- Bigger- Better! Whatever your goals are, we applaud your participation and congratulate you on your personal journey towards the Starting Line on the 23rd August 2015.Below is the route of both marathons, half and full, so read through it, picture it in your mind’s eye, and hopefully you will see yourself crossing the Finish Line on the running track at Aura Leisure Centre, achieving a Personal Best to rapturous encouragement and congratulations of supporters and fellow competitors alike.Donegal Marathon 2015 Route Half Marathon:The marathon will start near Aura Leisure Centre on the main R250 road and will proceed in the direction of the town passing old Dunne’s Stores and turning left onto Pearse Road. It will then turn right at the intersection with Rosemount towards the new Dunne’s Stores Roundabout and out the Neil T. Blaney Road towards the Polestar Roundabout. Here it will turn left and proceed up the Port Road and continue straight past the Station Roundabout towards Main Street. It will follow Main Street onto Lower Main Street, proceeding straight ahead towards Aura on the R250 past St. Eunan’s GAA grounds, O’Donnell Park, and out by Conwal Cemetery where it will continue until the left turn towards Glenties. It will then take the immediate left at Rashedoge back towards the town via Newmills, Rockhill and Oldtown. It will cross the Oldtown Bridge and proceed straight ahead and back towards Aura Leisure Centre finishing on the running track.Full Marathon:The first half of the full marathon will be the same as the half marathon route ,the competitors for the full marathon will however complete another loop of the Newmills/Rashedoge section and after crossing the Oldtown Bridge for a second time will then turn right and take in a circuit of the town that includes the Pearse Road to Station Roundabout, a right along the Port Road towards the Polestar Roundabout, turning left along Ballyraine and left at the small roundabout up towards Gortlee and past the Church of the Irish Martyrs. The runners then turn right at the bottom of Gortlee and run towards the Station Roundabout, turning right towards the Port Road, onto Main Street, proceeding to Lower Main Street and out the R250 towards Aura Leisure Centre finishing on the running track.NEW ROUTE OF DONEGAL MARATHON REVEALED was last modified: May 15th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:DONEGAL MARATHONNew routeRevealedlast_img read more
