The Metro board voted to raise bus and train tickets to $1.50 on July 1, 2009, under a compromise proposed by Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina. The board voted 9-4 to approve the controversial rate hike after hours of public hearings from riders hotly opposed to fare increases. The hike was less than a staff proposal to increase fares to $2 from the current $1.25. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who wanted a lower fare hike, voted against the compromise.
