Did You Know That Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Won A GRAMMY? In addition to being nominated three times, the civil rights leader posthumously won for Best Spoken Word Recording in 1971 for “Why I Oppose The War In Vietnam”Rachel BrodskyGRAMMYs Jan 21, 2019 – 8:42 am Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is as instantly recognizable in American history as a public figure can be. The civil rights leader, who singlehandedly challenged ingrained racial barriers in the United States through peaceful protest, earned a number of accolades in his too-short life, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and, the following year, the American Liberties Medallion by the American Jewish Committee (among others). Among his many, many awards is even a GRAMMY: Dr. King postumously won for Best Spoken Word Recording at the 13th GRAMMY Awards in 1971 for “Why I Oppose The War In Vietnam.”Not only that, but Dr. King was nominated two other times: once at the 11th GRAMMY Awards in 1969 for Best Spoken Word Recording (I Have A Dream), and prior to that in 1964 at the 6th GRAMMY Awards, for Best Documentary, Spoken Word Or Drama Recording (Other Than Comedy) for “We Shall Overcome (The March On Washington…August 28, 1963).”In honor of Dr. King and his mission, which we observe on Martin Luther King Day, let’s revisit his GRAMMY-nominated (and winning!) works. At The 6th Annual GRAMMY Awards…In the early ’60s, Dr. King earned his first GRAMMY nod for We Shall Overcome (The March On Washington…August 28, 1963), which was up for Best Documentary, Spoken Word Or Drama Recording (Other Than Comedy). The authorized radio broadcast captured more than 250,000 people marching on Washington, D.C. in peaceful protest against racial segregation and for equal rights legislation. It featured performances from folk heroes Joan Baez, Odetta, Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul & Mary and Marian Anderson. It also captured Dr. King’s now world-renowned “I Have A Dream” speech, where he famously called for racial and economic justice, as well as a general end to racism in the United States. At The 11th Annual GRAMMY Awards…One year after his assasination, the Recording Academy again recognized Dr. King with a Best Spoken Word Recording nomination. As opposed to the early ’60s radio broadcast recording mentioned above, this nomination recognized a newer recording distributed by 20th Century Fox Records called Have A Dream: The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 1929-1968, with the subtitle reading, “The original address from the March on Washington, August 28, 1963.” According to Discogs, King is the only advertised name on the album jacket, but co-organizer A. Phillip Randolph and fellow civil rights activists Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, John Lewis, Whitney M. Young, Jr. and Roy Wilkins are also featured on the recording. A true revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our past and present policies…true compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar, it comes to see that an edifice that produces beggars needs restructuring.”As you can no doubt tell, revisiting King’s teachings on peace and race equality are a vital part of how society will continue to evolve, even decades later. Have a happy and healthy Martin Luther King Day, and find out who’ll take home GRAMMY gold this year when the 61st GRAMMY Awards air on Sunday, Feb. 10 on CBS. Deleted accounts included those of “a popular talk show celebrity, an entertainment blogger who shared film footage, online influencers commenting on social issues, and bloggers writing extensively on ethnicity,” according to the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post.“Some spread politically harmful information, maliciously distorted party or state history, slandered heroes, or discredited the country’s image. Some created rumors, spread fake information, generated clickbait…disrupting the normal social order,” the CAC statement said. It added that other deleted accounts had participated in “malicious marketing,” extortion, or copyright infringement, while others had spread vulgar content, “challenging the moral bottom line and harming the healthy growth of the majority of young people.”China has severely ramped up media policing since President Xi Jinping took office in 2012, and is increasingly concerned that airwaves and chatrooms should only be filled with government-friendly, “positive” content. Western social media sites including Google, Facebook, and Twitter are inaccessible in mainland China. Only content that passes strict censorship reviews is supposed to be aired or screened. The crackdowns have sometimes been unintentionally absurd or hilarious. In 2016, authorities banned live-streamers from eating bananas in an “erotic” fashion while on camera. Last summer, they famously banned Western teen idol Justin Bieber from performing on the mainland. Authorities cited unspecified bad behavior on and off stage that they said made him an unsavory person who would prevent China from “purifying” and “maintaining order” in its performing arts scene. And in January, authorities asked TV shows to keep off air performers displaying tattoos or anything related to hip-hop music or subcultures. The CAC called meetings to issue “serious warnings” to managers of Sina Weibo and Tencent’s WeChat, it said. The companies had been chastised for “irresponsible and neglectful management” of the social media space, which had “allowed wild growth and caused all kinds of chaos.” Popular on Variety ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. It is the ruling Communist Party’s latest move to clamp down on freedom of expression. The cleanup began Oct. 20, the Cyberspace Administration of China said in a statement posted late Monday to its official website. The removals follows a similar purge in June that took down scores of entertainment news media accounts, among others. More than 9,800 accounts were removed from Chinese social media platforms such WeChat and Weibo, the country’s Twitter equivalent, as well as from its Google-like search engine Baidu. The sweep also included leading private-sector news aggregators Toutiao and Sohu. Sina Weibo in turn said on its official account that it had “seriously accepted” the need to rectify its management procedures, and would “implement corrective actions” that focused on curbing pornographic and “politically harmful” content. It issued an 11-point list describing what now constitutes such content, including posts that “endanger national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” “spread rumors, disrupt social order, and undermine social stability,” or “distort, vilify or defame…heroic martyrs.” In a series of posts earlier this week, Weibo also publicly named a number of popular accounts that had since been deleted, including some with nearly 5 million followers. It explained that others had been temporarily suspended for content such as a “beautiful male butt contest.”Disgruntled users and fans took to Weibo to express their dismay over missing accounts, though it appeared that many negative messages were themselves soon censored. “Wow, they can really just totally wipe out a person in the blink of an eye. This round of purification is just too horrible,” one wrote Wednesday. “Even ‘big V’ online influencers are just sacrificial lambs – as the authorities sharpen their knives, everyone is in danger.” Another asked: “This person was only talking about economics — that’s not okay either?”Bemoaning the loss of a popular account, one user wrote: “If even this account is closed, should we expect to be watching only ‘model operas’ in the coming years?” That is a reference to the eight politically approved stories that were the only ones permitted on screen or stage during the tumultuous years of the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution.
With a new dynamic tourism minister at the helm of affairs, West Bengal tourism is planning a big leap forward. The new tourism minister, Krishnendu Narayan Choudhury, on Thursday launched a major campaign in Delhi setting a tone that he means serious business. In an exclusive interview with the Millennium Post, he has described many of his new plans for the future. Read on…It is commonly perceived that West Bengal is lagging behind in promoting tourism? Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’It is a fact that our state earlier had not given enough importance to tourism but after the new government took over under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, we have given a very special focus to tourism. We have the Sunderbans, Darjeeling, Deegha but enough initiative was not taken to promote such destinations. After I took over, I am focusing on improving the existing infrastructure so that we can offer better facilities to the tourists. We are trying to do tie-ups with the industries as a whole like travel-agents, tour operators, other state governments, foreign governments and private players. Our budget allocation for tourism has also increased to Rs. 120 crores which is a big leap. We are also tied-up with Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd to provide helicopter service facilities to different parts of Bengal particularly with tourist destinations like Sunderbans, the hills and Deegha. We are also trying to create new infrastructure for some tourist destinations like Gajaldoba which is near Bagdogra Airport and Jharkhali in Sunderban. Our motto is to treat every tourist as an important guest of the state. We are focusing on both, high-end as well as the budget travellers. How about foreign travelers? At present, an average of 3000 foreign travellers come to West Bengal and our position is 6th in all India basis but we are planning to increase it to 10,000 within next three years. A lot of big hotel chains are showing interest to set up more hotels in our state for which our government is going to extend all assistance. But what about the disturbances in the hills, Darjeeling area due to agitation? After our government took over, highest number of tourists arrived in the hills after a long gap and our CM is doing everything for the development of the hills. The livelihood of the local people is totally linked with tourism and we are hopeful that peace will remain there and more tourists will visit the hills.
