Last night, a Frank Zappa tribute for the ages took place at TRiP Santa Monica, as his former band members Arthur Barrow and Chad Wackerman united for the memorable performance. Barrow played with Zappa in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, and his work has been featured by the likes of The Doors, Joe Cocker, Janet Jackson and more.Barrow has recently been reviving his time with Zappa by performing with Cosmik Playground, a tribute to the late great guitarist with a rotating lineup. The band is led by the talented Marcus Rezak, who’s careful guitarwork embodies the spirit of Zappa’s performing. Rezak made last night’s performance even more special by recruiting Chad Wackerman, a drummer who worked with Zappa from 1981 through 1988.Joined by Aaron Provisor on the keys, the two set performance saw the band play classics from the Frank Zappa catalog. A stunning photograph of a centipede-inspired robot (called a centipede millibot) developed by Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) graduate student Katie Hoffman and faculty member Robert Wood was chosen as an Honorable Mention (tie) by Science and the National Science Foundation in the Photography category in the 2010 International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge.Of their selection, the editors wrote:Imitating insects is all the rage in robotics right now. Graduate student Katie Hoffman based this 12-legged, segmented robot on the body morphology of a centipede. The top view shows the actuators that control each leg, the reflection shows the flexible connections between the segments, and the penny gives a sense of the robot’s size. Hoffman says most robots that size mimic cockroaches, which have only six legs and much more rigid bodies. By modeling a centipede, she hopes to study how flexibility and body undulations enhance locomotion.Wood, an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at SEAS and a Core Member of the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard, oversees one of the world’s leading labs on microrobotics. The centipede millibot is part of the lab’s efforts in advancing ambulatory microrobots.Hoffman explained that the photo was not edited in any way, but came straight from the camera. Each of the legs is etched with the words “Harvard Microrobotics Lab” in 150-micron wide text.See the centipede millibot in motion.
A Cheltenham Festival winner over hurdles last season, he has excelled over fences and was a good winner of the Topaz Novice Chase over Christmas. However, that was over three miles and he would be dropping three furlongs in trip were he to take up his option this weekend. Advertising the strength in depth of trainer Willie Mullins and owners Gigginstown House Stud, Valseur Lido is another possible. He has not been seen since a very impressive display in the Drinmore Novice Chase in November. Jarry D’Honneur and Adriana Des Mottes are other options for Mullins. Gigginstown also have Mouse Morris’ Rule The World and Band Of Blood under consideration, along with Noel Meade’s Very Wood, who is another previous Cheltenham winner. Morris said of Rule The World: “He will either go to Leopardstown this weekend or Navan a week later, we’ll just see what the weather does. It’s been pretty cold here the last two days. “He’s taken well to fences, I think. “First time he was only just beaten by a smart mare of Willie’s (Adriana Des Mottes) giving her lumps of weight and then the ground was just a little bit testing at Naas. “That’s taking nothing away from the winner (Wounded Warrior), though, because he looks a smart one. “At that time I just had a few not running up to scratch and I think he could have been one” The Tullow Tank, disappointing the last twice for Sandra Hughes, Shanahan’s Turn, Le Vent D’Antan and Draycott Place are the other possibles. The race used to be run as the Dr P.J. Moriarty Chase and the likes of Bostons Angel and Cooldine have won it before winning the RSA Chase the following month, while Lord Windermere was beaten in it two years ago before winning at Cheltenham. RSA Chase favourite Don Poli is among a total of 12 horses in the mix for Sunday’s Flogas Novice Chase at Leopardstown. Press Association
Hamilton, bidding for a sixth world title to move within one of Michael Schumacher’s record seven, topped all three free practice sessions before making it four-out-of-four during qualifying. His dominance in qualifying in Melbourne is unsurpassed with Ayrton Senna, on six poles, the next in line. Hamilton complained after pre-season testing in Barcelona that Ferrari was much quicker, but it appears to have been mind games with business as usual resumed this week. Mercedes and Hamilton have been dominant in Formula One in recent years, winning the drivers’ and constructors’ titles five years in a row and Ferrari — and Vettel — are desperate to catch up. While the German won in Melbourne last year and backed it up with victory at the next race in Bahrain, Hamilton roared back to sweep 11 of the remaining 19 Grand Prix to comfortably be crowned champion. All Vettel’s world titles came at Red Bull, from 2010-2013, while Ferrari haven’t won a constructors crown since 2008 and no driver at the Italian outfit has tasted championship success since Kimi Raikkonen in 2007. Hamilton topped Q2 in 1:21:014 from Bottas and Verstappen, with Vettel running into the gravel at Turn 12, kicking up dirt and dust and telling his team on the radio that the “floor, front wing” would need to be checked. Daniel Ricciardo was a big casualty in Q2, finishing 12th in his first outing for new team Renault after moving from Red Bull. His team-mate Nico Hulkenberg also missed the cut, as did Toro Rosso pair Daniel Kvyat and Alexander Albon. Leclerc topped Q1 with 1:22:017 ahead of Hamilton and Bottas. Red Bull newcomer Pierre Gasly was among those who failed to get out of Q1 along with McLaren’s Carlos Sainz and Racing Point’s Lance Stroll. Robert Kubica, who clipped the wall and sustained a puncture in his Williams, was last. Lewis Hamilton has secured pole in Australian Grand Prix in every race since 2014.Hamilton is bidding for his sixth world championship.Hamilton has won twice in Australia, winning in 2014 and 2015. Melbourne: Mercedes’ world champion Lewis Hamilton picked up where he left off last year to reassert his authority and snatch a record-extending eighth pole position at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on Saturday. The Briton clocked a fastest lap of one minute 20.486 to narrowly pip team-mate Valtteri Bottas, with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel third, but well off the pace on 1:21.190. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was fourth and Ferrari newcomer Charles Leclerc fifth. The 34-year-old is the pole master in Melbourne, claiming it eight times and every year since 2014, although he has only twice, in 2008 and 2015, won a race at Albert Park. He knocked out his rivals with a blistering lap at the death to claim an 84th career grid-leading time in his 230th race. “I’m shaking, it was so close out there,” said Hamilton. “Coming from testing we had no idea where we would be, but the guys in the factory have been working so hard towards this weekend. Valtteri did an exceptional job, it was so close.” highlights For all the Latest Sports News News, Other Sports News, Download News Nation Android and iOS Mobile Apps.
