Program encourages faith formation amongst Latinos

first_imgThe Institute for Church Life (ICL) at the University of Notre Dame has launched Camino, an online faith formation program for Latino Catholics.Camino Program Director Esther Terry has developed Camino from its early stages, she said.“The program has been in the works for a long time and the pilot phase started in 2012,” Terry said. “The pilot phase started with just one course that was adapted from a course that we have in English.”According to its website, Camino is an online program of Catholic theology courses designed by University professors and leaders in Latino ministry. A facilitator, who must have a master’s degree in theology, instructs the course, which can last anywhere from four to seven weeks.Camino stems from Notre Dame’s Satellite Theological Education Program (STEP), a program developed in the early 1990s that aimed to provide high quality theology courses at affordable prices.“For a long time people had been taking these courses in English, and they had been receiving requests for courses in Spanish,” Terry said. On Camino’s website, Notre Dame professor of theology Fr. Virgil Alizondo said Camino is “a great way to use media and technology to give learning opportunities beyond the University.”The STEP program worked in collaboration with the SouthEast Pastoral Institute in Miami (SEPI) to develop Camino. Various dioceses are also involved with advertising the program to potential participants.“The people that take our courses are typically catechists, readers [and] serve in the music ministry,” Terry said. “[They] usually have some position in their parish and they want to have ongoing faith formation.”Terry said the program prides itself in the flexibility and accessibility of its courses. She said many of Camino’s participants live in rural areas or other places where learning resources in their native language are limited.“I think the flexibility of hours for taking an online course and the quality of what we are able to deliver in places where it would be very difficult for them to have this formation experience makes [this program] very important,” Terry said.Terry said she enjoys contributing to Camino.“It’s been so exciting to see people engage Scripture and engage the Catechism and see the sense of wonder and excitement that they have and how dignified they feel to be taking an online course with Notre Dame,” Terry said.Terry said her hope for Camino and other theological programs like it is that the intellectual resources at Notre Dame and other partners and affiliates are made available to an even more diverse group of people.“We want to share those resources with people in the pews, your average Catholics, and help them to see the beauty and the joy of our Catholic faith so that they can share that with others,” Terry said.Tags: Camino, Hispanic Catholics, ICL, Institute for Church Life, SEPI, SouthEast Pastoral Institute in Miami, STEPlast_img read more

Season opener is Sunday for Thomas County Speedway

first_imgBy John SchmidtCOLBY, Kan. – The long wait for the 2014 race season at Thomas County Speedway is just about over as action resumes this Sunday, May 11 at 7 p.m.Just like last season, several improvements have been made to the track as well as the grandstands. Another change is the return of the wild and crazy cruisers. With the help of Bernie Meyer at Murfin Drilling and several others, the table top in turns three and four has been removed. The wall was moved back a couple feet, then the track was graded the rest of the way to the wall. This widened turns three and four by about eight feet. Also, the wall was pointed down at an angle so it will help push the cars back on the track instead of creating a ramp. MD Auto Works of Colby is sponsoring an extra $100 to the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified purse each race. That means an extra $50 for first place, $30 for second, and $20 for third. One of the biggest changes fans in the grandstand will notice is the new and improved sound system. The announcer spent the offseason shopping for a new sound system and with the help from sponsors and volunteers. BP Miller Farms, Donna Bennett with Waddell and Reed, NWK Tree Service, J & S Trucking and Renee Rains Photography contributed to this great improvement to the speedway. The schedule features several special events this year. Cruisers will make their return to Colby on June 1, 15, and Aug. 10. URSS 305 sprint cars return trip on June 29. On Saturday July 5 will be an enduro race. When the BST Series returns on July 20 it will bring NASCAR driver Ken Schrader to race with the best Modified drivers Northwest Kansas has to offer. For a full schedule and a list of all the grandstand specials, check out thomascountyspeedway.com or go to the track’s Facebook page. Hot laps start at 6 p.m. Sunday. Drivers can call the Quality Inn for rooms and ask for the special racers’ rate.Thomas County also sanctions the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stockslast_img read more

Frank de Boer is New Crystal Palace Boss

first_imgFrank de Boer has said that he is excited to join a club that “spend a lot of money” after becoming Crystal Palace boss. The 47-year-old Dutchman, who has signed a three-year deal, succeeds Sam Allardyce, who left after helping Palace avoid relegation last season.“The aim is to be a solid Premier League team, not to struggle with relegation,” said the former defender, who won 112 caps for the Netherlands.“That is our main target – if we do more that’s nice.”Between 2010 and 2016, De Boer managed Ajax, winning the Eredivisie four years in a row between 2011 and 2015. However, he had been out of work since being sacked by Italian side Inter Milan in November after only 85 days in charge – although he said he learned “a lot” from his brief time at the San Siro.“I had a good feeling about the club and the prospect of managing a team in the Premier League was exciting,” added De Boer.“This club can grow further and further. They spend a lot of money and there is the possibility to do something well with that money.“I’ve not met the players yet. We will look at one or two signings, but I think it is necessary to see all the players here first.”American billionaires Josh Harris and David Blitzer took a large stake in the club in December 2015 and promised significant investment.Belgium striker Christian Benteke joined Palace from Liverpool for a club record £27m last summer. And the Eagles earned over £109.6m in television and prize money after finishing 14th in the Premier League last season.De Boer had stints at Ajax and Barcelona, as well as six months at Rangers, during his playing career, while he was also Netherlands assistant manager from 2008 to 2010.He said he had spoken to fellow Dutchman and ex-Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal prior to becoming Palace’s first permanent non-British manager.“I have my own type of coaching and style of playing. We want to be dominant when we can, but also dominate when we don’t have the ball,” he said.“Also for the fans, we must try to be attractive. Palace has a very enthusiastic and passionate fanbase, so they will want to see that.”Eagles chairman Steve Parish said he had been “surprised” by Allardyce’s departure but had consulted with the ex-England boss about his successor. He added that De Boer’s experience of developing young players was one of the attributes that made him suitable for the Selhurst Park club.“It’s fantastically exciting for this football club, an amazing milestone for us,” said Parish.“I am excited to work with him and by what we can achieve with the club.”Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more
